The Rotas square. It reads the same from every direction. A mystery for almost two thousand years! Rotas squares have been found as far apart as Pompei and Colchester and until recently no-one knew what they meant. More recently it was discovered that the letters make up the word "paternoster" twice, arranged into a cruciform cross, suggesting that these were plaques erected by early Christians to announce faith in spite of the Roman attitudes.
